Bandra Fire Relief
4th March 2011

On 4th March 2011 a fire broke out at 8.30 p.m. in Garib Nagar slum at Bandra (E), Mumbai. Nearly 450 hutments were gutted in the blaze and 1800 people were rendered homeless. After assessment undertaken on 11th March it was found that after the initial assistance from political parties and NGO’s when the story was "News”, relief to those most affected had reduced to a trickle. A list was provided by Mr. Radheshyam Chavan, Corporator of Garib Nagar, of those whose houses were burnt to cinders and who needed assistance. Maharashtra State Branch distributed kits to the victims of 354 families which included: a stove, kitchen set consisting of 21 items, mat, bucket, mug, tarpaulin, dhoti, sari and towel.
